Dave Nachmanoff - In Sickness and In Health

John Jameson

From John Jameson:

"I recently finished recording twelve songs with Dave is his studio in Davis California. It is an interesting story.

I first met Dave three years ago at a Totally Guitar’s camp in California. I was a beginning songwriter and got over some of my nervousness and played some of my songs at camp. The camp was so much fun and the vibe with the other guitarists was so positive I decided to return the next year. At camp that year, Dave lead a Song Writing workshop, stayed up late playing with everyone and sat in for one of our evening open mics. He could play anything on a moments notice, and did. He played with any camper who wanted him to. He also soloed some of his own stuff-amazing.

The next year at camp in 2015, I again played some of my own songs and hung around with Dave talking about music and songwriting. Dave invited me to come out to his studio to record some of my stuff the following summer(at a very reasonable rate) I said to myself “you would be a fool not to” and started planning my trip. I had always dreamed of recording my songs but had no idea where to start.

In June of this past year I sent Dave some lyric sheets and played sang 8 songs into the voice memos on my IPhone( I am not very high tech but getting better) and sent them to Dave. Camp was in late August, so we planned for me to come early and work in Dave’s studio in Davis. We chose three songs to record and we recorded three songs in three days. This is where the magic that is Dave Nachmanoff comes into the story big time. Dave was encouraging, helpful and a lot of other descriptions that added up for success. Together we turned my simple sings into professional recordings. I was so pumped that I returned to Davis on December 4th with the goal of 7 more songs and a finished CD. No surprise, the magic of Dave kicked into overdrive and by the end of the week we had completed 9 songs. My head is still reeling and I can hardly contain myself-yes I am excited!

How it worked: In his studio, Dave created a simple drum track. I then played guitar to the track. Next I sang a vocal. Some of these steps I had to do a few(right) times ,but Dave guided me through it. Next Dave added bass, lead guitars, violin, mandolin whatever we decided the song needed. He put his creativity to work and we had a blast working together. Part of the fun was watching Dave record the songs to his computer and work with the tracks to set volumes, correct tempos, pick drum tracks and edit as needed. As I said Dave is Magical.

Next steps for me are to finish a few backing vocals, get the songs mastered, and contract to have the CDs made. Dave is guiding me through this process too.

If you have ever wanted to record a song or many songs or want to spend a day or two writing a song and recording it with Dave, I strongly recommend it. I had a blast and grew exponentially as a singer/songwriter in the process. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT! I am already thinking about my next CD. I still have songs I haven’t recorded yet. Also, Davis is a fun little college town with great restaurants and is close to wine country-Hey, come for vacation! Drop me an email at if you are curious and want to know more.

A huge thank you to all who helped to make the CD release concert at the Freight and Salvage such a success! Especially all the guest artists: Jim and Kathy Ocean, Megan McLaughlin, and Celia Ramsay.

If you have seen the cover of Al Stewart's last CD "Uncorked" or Dave's 2011 release "Step Up", then you have seen the work of Dave Clements, a Houston based photographer who has recently released a great book of music photographs called "Raising A Hand - The Book". These are black and white photos of artists from Sir Paul McCartney to Dolly Parton to Al Stewart. It's all for a great cause - raising money to fight "Rett Syndrome" (a neurological disorder that strikes mostly girls, causing them to regress to infancy and lose all ability to communicate) and raising awareness about this terrible disease.

"Dave Clements is a mensch and a talented artist. It is a huge honor to be a small part of this ambitious project and I encourage you to visit his website and order a copy for yourself." - Dave Nachmanoff

Dave recently did an interview with Mark Linsenmayer for "Nakedly Examined Music". Nakedly Examined Music is a podcast about making music: Why do we do it? Why do we do it the way we do it? Mark Linsenmayer interviews songwriters and composers famous and otherwise about specific recordings, which are presented in full on the podcast.

Here's the review:

DAVE NACHMANOFF/Spinoza’s Dream: No one is ever going to accuse Nachmanoff of indulging in humblebrag. I first heard of him a few years ago when it just seemed like he was a side kick come lately of Al Stewart in Stewart’s post hit years. Surprise! This cat is more like a guitar folk rock version of Denny Zeitlin. Putting the things he’s always wanted to combine in purely his own way, this album is the result of hanging out in England for three weeks with like minded first call folk rockers that were all in synch. A real treasure of a folk rock session that organic ears are going to flip for, there hasn’t been stuff like this so consistently hot since, dare I say it, the pre-disco years. Not exactly a post card from another time zone or a time piece, the only throwback here is a return to the kind of killer under the radar record that fueled rabid cults. A winner throughout by one whose the better for paying dues and none the worse for wear for it.

Milk Crater has an exclusive world wide premiere of "Never Enough", a co-write with Al Stewart, from the new album "Spinoza's Dream". Check it out!

Cult folk icon Dave Nachmanoff is an award-winning solo artist and an esteemed sideman to British legend Al Stewart (“Year Of The Cat”), collaborator, music educator, performer, and composer. Nachmanoff also wields a Ph.D in philosophy. For his latest album, Spinoza’s Dream, to be released in May 2016, Nachmanoff cleverly combines thought-provoking philosophical themes with his subtly elegant songwriter sensibilities, and the result is a creative masterwork. This spring Nachmanoff will also be doing his first solo European tour to promote the new album.

Not many people get to realize their early dreams - Dave Nachmanoff dreamt of working with singer/songwriter Al Stewart ("Year of the Cat", "Time Passages"), and now tours as his lead guitarist and accompanist, and often as his opening act, from venues as far ranging as the Royal Albert Hall in London, England, to the The Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia. From performing with folk legend Libba Cotten at the age of 9, to playing in a rock band with his two brothers, Dave went on to earn a PhD in Philosophy and slowly built a grassroots following touring all over the US, Canada, and Europe, both on his own, and with Al Stewart. "Spinoza's Dream" is Dave's dream coming true: a philosophically themed collection of new songs, featuring fantastic musicians, all of whom played on some of Al Stewart's classic albums.

EXCITING NEWS - In May 2016, my next CD, "Spinoza's Dream" will be released.

If you follow a dream, you can reach the stars. The new CD "Spinoza’s Dream“ is actually my dream coming true; a philosophically themed collection of new songs, featuring fantastic musicians, all of whom played on some of Al Stewart’s classic albums, like "Year of the Cat", (plus Al himself!), recorded in Wales by Grammy-award winning producer/engineer, Martin Levan! With your help this special album can reach a wider audience.

I've started a Kickstarter for the new CD. As some of you know, a Kickstarter campaign works something like a PBS fund drive. There are various levels of sponsorship and special "Thank You" rewards that are available when you contribute. This Kickstarter campaign is only 30 days long, and some of the rewards are limited in number, so will go to the first people who claim them. As you probably know, if I don’t hit my goal of $10,000, the project fails, so all donations count! So please don't put off taking a look at this!

The Yolo County Food Bank has raised enough money to get a refrigerated food truck!

Dave performed a benefit concert for the cause in December.

Dave Nachmanoff will perform a benefit concert for a campaign to purchase a refrigerated truck for the Yolo County Food Bank in California. This is a rare opportunity to see Dave in Davis, as he is often touring the country and world.

Doors open at 7:00 p.m., concert at 7:30-9:30 p.m.

Next month many people who have never seen me live will be hearing one of my songs!  By sheer luck, some wonderful friends of mine in Seattle live near the person who picks music for Starbucks, and he heard my song “Descartes in Amsterdam”!  And now it will be featured on their November Playlist in the US and Canada (hopefully, they will pick it up for the rest of the world in the future).

In honor of this exciting news, my talented friend Anne Burghard created a music video using some lovely pictures that she took in Amsterdam.

During November, please do stop into a nearby Starbucks and let us know if you hear it come on.  We will try to track the most “Descartes In Starbucks” sightings (hearings?) and award a cool prize to whomever wins.  I think Starbucks baristas have to be declared ineligible, as they’d have an unfair advantage – sorry!  Just send an email to with “Descartes at Starbucks” in the subject line, and the city where you heard it and the date.

Yes, you read that right  - this summer I will be going into the studio  (in Wales) to record a new CD!

In late July, I will be working at Red Kite Studio ( in Wales with Martin Levan, a Grammy award-winning engineer/producer.  Among his achievements, Martin worked on albums from Iron Maiden to Ralph McTell, did sound design and original recordings for numerous Andrew Lloyd Webber productions, and invented the A/B system used in most contemporary musical theater productions.  It is an honor to be working with Martin and my thanks go out to our mutual friends, Phil and Jean Wilson, who connected us.

The album will feature many of the musicians who performed on Al Stewart's "Year of the Cat" album, including Tim Renwick, Mark Griffiths, Stuart Elliott, Peter White and Al Stewart himself. The project will also feature Graham Smith and Dave Ellis (who both appeared on Al's 'Modern Times") and Boo Howard, Dave Ellis's duo partner.  The chance to record with the "Year of the Cat" reunion band is a longtime dream of mine that started to come into fruition in 2013 when I appeared onstage at the Royal Albert Hall with many of these musicians.  This past spring (2015), I once again had the good fortune to appear onstage with these wonderful players, at two separate RAH engagements (read below).

The band

Projected release date for the album, tentatively titled "Spinoza's Dream" is early 2016.  This "dream come true" would never be possible without incredibly generous financial support from a small number of friends and fans. Heart-felt thanks to all who have helped so far and who believe in me and this project!

This past May, there was another large tour of the British Isles with Al Stewart, and we did not one, but two shows at the Albert Hall this time around.  The band was mostly the same as in 2013, and many of the players are the same ones who will be joining me this summer!  Part of the tour was a trio with my favorite guitarist, Tim Renwick, and some was a quartet with Tim and multi-instrumentalist Marc Macisso.

The 2015 British Isles tour with Al Stewart is going great so far! It's been a thrill (again) to play with Tim Renwick, and the crowds have been great. We haven't really announced it before this, but in April of 2016 I will be coming back for my first solo European tour! On THIS tour, we have a limited edition tour shirt (see pix) for next year's solo tour for sale - but as I really want to encourage my friends in the UK and the Continent to come out to the shows next year I am promising anyone who shows up at one of the APRIL 2016 gigs wearing one of these tour T-shirts a free CD! So if you buy the shirt, you are getting the shirt and a CD for 15 pounds. They will be available at all the UK shows while supplies last. All the dates for the 2016 tour are up on and will be updated as we add some shows (anyone wishing to set up a house concert, send an email to or to me at

Dave Nachmanoff recently appeared on the nationally syndicated show "Overnight America with Jon Grayson". Here's a link to the interview MP3:

Dave Nachmanoff will be on the nationally syndicated radio show "Overnight America with Jon Grayson" tonight. Times vary, but usually 12 or 1 AM to 5 in the morning. It airs in Los Angeles, Seattle, Charlottesville, Pittsburgh, Minneapolis, St. Louis, Milwaukee, and more, or you can listen via TuneIn on your smart phone.

Here is the Minneapolis affiliate:

Jon has previously interviewed the legendary Smokey Robinson, Peter Frampton, Lisa Loeb, B.J. Thomas, and yes, even Al Stewart!

"Introducing… the new overnight lead-in to morning drive, live, from legendary KMOX St. Louis.

Overnight America is the fresh, upbeat, talk-driven program that electrifies the pre-dawn airwaves with smart conversation.

No little green men and no best-of’s or repeats, just fresh talk about the things your listeners care about, from pop culture to politics.

Host Jon Grayson is a young gun with major-league radio chops. Every weeknight, Jon adeptly covers all the issues of the day, connects one-on-one with callers, and engages effortlessly with celebrities and guests alike.

Topical, Approachable, and Informative… it’s a great alternative to everything alternative.

Begin the day with what’s next. Not what’s yesterday."

Dave Nachmanoff will be Al Stewart's guitarist and opening act on a tour of the UK in October, 2013, which includes stops at The Stables in Milton Keynes, the Queens Hall in Edinburgh, the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, the Royal Albert Hall and more.

With an enthusiasm sparked by the praise showered on its 2012 Parents’ Choice Gold Award winning album, Someone Else’s Shoes, and its March 2013 album, SHARE!, Recess Music turns to the concept of thankfulness with the August 27 release of Gratitude Attitude, the fifth in the company’s “Best Foot Forward” series of CDs ($12.99, for ages 4 – 11, run time 46 minutes).  Other titles in the “Best Foot Forward” series include SHARE!, Someone Else’s Shoes, Big Bully, and U R SOME 1.

The aim of Recess Music’s “Best Foot Forward” series is to entertain while educating children and to provide families with a springboard for dialogue that explores ways of being that play a vital role in coping with life.  The music on Gratitude Attitude was chosen with an eye to helping children understand that their attitudes are just as important as their actions in bringing harmony and understanding to their classrooms, neighborhoods, and homes.

Dave Nachmanoff's contribution is "Grateful", a fan favorite from his "Threads of Time" CD.  For more information, visit:

Northern California singer-songwriters Celia Ramsay and Dave Nachmanoff have teamed up for two shows and will perform together in Berkeley and Davis, California in early May. These will be acoustic duo shows, with Dave and Celia accompanying each other on their songs.

The first show will take place in Berkeley, CA on Friday, May 3, 2013 at 7:30 PM (music starts at 8:00 PM). $20 suggested donation, includes refreshments. Seating is limited, and reservations are required. For reservations and directions, please email .

On Saturday, May 4, 2013, Celia and Dave will perform together in Davis, CA. Arrive at 7 PM (music starts at 7:30 PM). Suggested donation $20 (includes refreshments). Seating is limited - advance reservations are strongly suggested. For reservations and directions, please email .

Celia and her husband, winemaker Kent Rasmussen, started their winery in 1986, when they became famous for making terrific Pinot Noir.  One of their three labels sports Celia's last name.

Here is some information about Celia and Dave:

Celia Ramsay is fast becoming a popular name in the SF Bay Area music scene. She has performed at numerous house concerts, the San Francisco Free Folk Festival, the Freight and Salvage Coffeehouse in Berkeley, and The Palms Playhouse in Winters. Celia sings with a clear, clean style reminiscent of Keely Smith and has a taste for music that capture the perspective of what she sardonically calls a “woman of a certain age” – dark and honest, silly and bawdy, sultry and sublime.  Celia has been singing since she was a little girl and grew up with a passion for the traditional ballads of Scotland and for American pop and jazz of the 1930s and 40s. Both traditions, she says, lean heavily on songs about love and its trials, tribulations, and triumphs.  Please visit .

Dave Nachmanoff grew up in the '60s and '70s surrounded by the active folk scene of Northern Virginia and Washington, DC, jamming with Elizabeth Cotten and Utah Phillips as a child. After completing his PHD at UC Davis, he released "Candy Shower" in 1997 and has been touring as a professional musician ever since. He's played at some of the top clubs in the U.S., Canada and Europe, both on his own and as the opening act, acoustic lead guitarist and verbal sparring partner for British folk artist Al Stewart. He has 9 CDs out, including a live CD, "Snapshots", which was recorded at The Palms when it was in Davis. His website is .

I will appear on KVMR in Nevada City, CA on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at 5 PM to talk about the Sutter Creek Theatre gig on February 2nd. It will be streamed so anyone can tune in.

As some of you know, I grew up in Arlington, Virginia. Whenever I can find an excuse to get back to visit my family, I try to do so, so it’s been great that Al and I regularly play in the area at the Birchmere, the Barns at Wolf Trap, the Ram's Head, etc. However, it’s been awhile since I’ve done my own show in the area and I’m very excited about the show we’ve just scheduled at Jammin’ Java. For this show, my brother, Michael will play bass. You may have heard us together before at Al Stewart shows (he also played on “Carol” on “Uncorked”) or on the CD, “Threads of Time”. We'll also have Eric and Jace Greenman on drums and percussion, and harmony vocalist Liz Bligan.

We will be celebrating my latest release "Step Up". Jammin Java is ranked as one of the best venues in the USA by Pollstar, Paste Magazine, Washington Post, Washington City Paper, and more. Bring the family for this special Father's Day show! This is an ALL AGES, non-smoking show and venue, so everyone is welcome.

Tickets $10 advance, $13 day of. I strongly encourage you to buy tickets in advance, and I’d love it if you can bring some friends. My following is built one person at a time, and if each of you brings one person who has never heard my music before, it will double the crowd, and hopefully build my fanbase too!

Dave has been recognized in three recent songwriting contests.

He was recognized in the USA Songwriting Competition with the song "Fragile Thing".

He was recognized in the International Acoustic Music Awards songwriting contest, with "Descartes in Amsterdam".

Most recently, Dave was recognized in the Folk/Americana category of the Great American Song Contest, with "Fragile Thing":

There's a nice new article on Riveting Check it out.

"For the last couple of years I have worked with Dave over the net on an album of my songs. As a songwriter who enjoys working in a wide variety of genres it has been an amazing experience. It's a lot like having a world class folk ensemble, jazz band, rock group and symphony orchestra ready to respond to my every suggestion. Not to mention so many helpful ideas and great assistance with production. We've added a few other guest artists for a bit of variety here and there, but they have all been brought in by Dave.

Dave provides a friendly and creative environment in which to work ... and I know about the values of 'creative tension' but think they're a bit over-rated.

It's a veritable one-stop shop at Nachville, friends and neighbours!

I am sure there are some limits to Dave's versatility (Would a request for dubstep qwwali rap song with a rai influence in the middle eight confound him, perhaps?) ... I just haven't discovered them yet. Plus nearly all communication has been by email between the south coast of England and Northern California ... but I bet you won't be able to tell from the finished tracks."

Thanks to for featuring me in their latest Mic News newsletter.

In October, Dave performed the first CD release party for "Step Up" in Davis, California at N Street Cohousing.

In November, he performed the second CD release party for "Step Up" in Sherman Oaks, California at Cafe Cordiale - in the Los Angeles area.

I recently won the grand prize in the ACCESS Bags and Cases "Social Media Giveaway" contest. I use an ACCESS case. ACCESS' mission is to offer musicians the finest guitar bags and cases to satisfy their needs at every stage of their musical journey. For more information:  .

I played on my friend Lisa Levine's new CD, "Soulful Shabbat Ruach".  She just released it on CDBaby, so I encourage you to go check it  out:

I'm thrilled to announce two musicians on my next CD: Ian Sheridan (bass), who played with Jason Mraz from 2002 - 2008, and Victor Bisetti (drums/percussion), who played with Los Lobos from 1990 - 2005 and has also worked with John Lee Hooker. We're starting the recording process this week at my producer, Ronan Chris Murphy's, Veneto West studio.

The “Kickstarter” campaign was a huge success, with the goal surpassed and funding reached within several days. At the end of the 30 day campaign, we had put together over $17,000 towards the new CD! Needless to say, I was staggered by the wonderful support and I am very grateful to all who jumped in with such generosity. There will be updates and info on the Kickstarter page (some of which will be just for “backers”) and I’ll probably put some stuff on Facebook as the project unfolds. All the “rewards” will be set up to go out when the CD is released, since most involve a copy of the CD, and it doesn’t make a lot of sense to ship stuff separately.

A number of people have contacted me to ask if they can still support the project and get the Rewards, even though they missed the deadline for the campaign – and the answer is YES! If you email me individually we can work it out in most cases. For more info on the possible Rewards see the Kickstarter page:

I am very happy to report that great progress has already been made on the new CD! This past November I attended a great conference in Los Angeles called the TAXI Road Rally, and heard a producer/engineer named Ronan Chris Murphy speak about recording. I’d read his articles before, but was really impressed by the talks that he gave, and in chatting with him later found out that he actually grew up in my hometown in Virginia. I asked him to send me some samples of his work and was impressed with the power, clarity and organic feel of recordings that he sent.

In late March Ronan came up to Davis and we spent a few intense days talking, listening to music and discussing a direction and plan for a CD that will represent me really strongly. Our first round of sessions are scheduled for the third week in April, in Los Angeles at Ronan’s studio ( and I’m really excited to be moving forward on this! Keep an eye on my main site ( and Facebook for more news in the coming weeks.

Last weekend I posted about the campaign to fund my next CD, using a cool site called "Kickstarter." You can check out the campaign here: I was staggered that within three days of beginning the campaign I had already reached my $10,000 goal! Thank you SO much for your support! Almost 200 of you have backed the project and now I can say that this CD will become a reality. However, we are not at the finish line yet, with less than three weeks left to go. The way that Kickstarter works, if you don't reach your goal by the deadline (in this case 30 days), you get nothing. So it is best to ask for the lower-end of what you think you will need, and hope that after you hit your goal, people will continue to back your project. To really make this CD as amazing as I hope to do, it will probably require somewhere between $15,000 and $25,000 (manufacturing, artwork, promotion all have to be considered as well as the recording process). So, if you haven't become a backer already, please consider joining the campaign, at whatever level is comfortable for you. I appreciate every donation, whether it's a dollar, or several thousand dollars. You can still be part of the amazing team that is putting this CD together. There have been several rewards that have been up since last weekend, but I also just added a few new rewards, and there will be more coming soon. Here are the latest additions: $50 – You will get a copy of the Sgt. Al poster signed by Al Stewart and myself, plus a physical copy of the CD. (Only one remaining as of this writing - act quick!) $1200 - You will get everything in the "Nach Pak" plus you will get a guitar workshop for you and 9 friends (10 total people, contiguous 48 states only) and you will be listed in the CD credits as an Executive Producer. If you would like to be notified of future rewards, please follow my Facebook pages or the Kickstarter website. Thanks again to all the 'backers' so far, and thanks in advance to all you future backers! I won't let you down. - Dave
BIG NEWS for 2011! Many friends and fans have been asking when I will release another CD (my last real solo CD was 2006, Time Before the Fall). Between family commitments, touring, and projects for others, my own songs have had to wait a bit. However, with Kickstarter I see a way to move forward. Just as I like to get people involved in the music through singing along, clapping along, or co-writing songs in my workshop, Kickstarter will allow my community (friends/family/fans) to be involved in this project! A Kickstarter campaign works something like a public radio and TV fund drive. There are various levels of sponsorship and special "Thank You" rewards that are available when you contribute. I will also be able to send updates and video/audio clips of the project as we go along. Some of the rewards include more direct involvement - such as a visit to the studio during one of the recording sessions. Read more and DONATE!
